Perry: Charlton will do better than Spurs

Everton 1 Charlton 0

Chris Perry believes his loan club Charlton have a brighter future than Tottenham despite last night's Carling Cup defeat at Goodison Park.

The defender wants to stay at The Valley after his loan spell ends on 8 November.

He said: "Charlton might not have the most glamorous team on paper but having worked with both squads, I know the players are just as good as at Tottenham and they are certainly younger.

"Spurs have a lot of older players who will come to the end of their careers in the next couple of years and it will be interesting to see how they rebuild."

Although defeat by Everton to a first-half goal from Swede Tobias Linderoth closes one route into Europe for Charlton, Perry is confident the club can get there through a top-six Premiership finish.

He added: "There is no reason Charlton can't finish that high if we keep people fit and play as we are. We were very unlucky. We go into our next Premiership game at Birmingham full of confidence."

Perry said he believed Tottenham's decision to allow him to play against Everton - and thus become cup-tied - indicated they would not stand in the way of him staying at Charlton. "You can read what you like into that," he added.

On the pitch, Jason Euell missed three gilt-edged chances for Charlton. Boss Alan Curbishley said: "Jason will feel he should have done better but he lacked sharpness because he's been out injured."
