Past their sell-by date

These 11 players are football's overpaid underachievers. They cost clubs more than £15million last year sitting on the bench. Their New Year wish is just to get rid of them!

Mark Bosnich (£40,000 a week)

Probably the most talented of the misfit XI. But weight and attitude problems have seen him fail at Manchester United and now Chelsea. Will probably be sacked at a disciplinary meeting next week after failing a drugs test for cocaine. So that's what he's been spending his wages on.

Winston Bogarde (£42,000 a week)

The Holland defender is surely the least productive of the seven Chelsea players earning £2million or more a year. A 21-minute run-out against Gillingham in the Worthington Cup has been the extent of his season, now ended by injury.

Alpay (£22,500 a week)

The Turkey World Cup defender wants a 50 per cent pay rise to £45,000 a week to stay at Aston Villa, and Graham Taylor is keen to show him the door. A move to Europe beckons.

Michael Duberry (£14,000 a week)

The former Chelsea defender was somehow offered a new fiveyear contract by Leeds last December, despite indifferent form and strained relations with centre-back partner Jonathan Woodgate. Unlikely to see it out.

Lee Bowyer (£25,000 a week)

The England midfielder turned down an offer of £40,000-aweek to stay at Leeds last year and has been time-serving at Elland Road ever since. Terry Venables wants him out as soon as possible, and Birmingham are interested, but the 25-year-old is likely to opt for a Bosman move this summer.

Tim Sherwood (£15,000 a week)

The former England international and Premiership-winning captain has not featured at all this season. This is partly because of injury but mostly because Glenn Hoddle objected to comments in a newspaper which questioned the club's - and Hoddle's - ambition.

Olivier Dacourt (£25,000 a week)

The French midfielder is being paid to skulk in Leeds' reserves and is desperate to move to Italy. The 27-yearold's value has dropped from £15m to £5m since the summer, which tells you all you need to know about how he's regarded at Elland Road now that Venables is in charge.

Hassan Kachloul (£11,000 a week)

The 29-year-old has played just nine minutes for Aston Villa this season, in the Worthington Cup, and is itching for a move despite his handsome wages. Villa have to sell before they can buy and it would take very little to prise the Moroccan away.

Fabrizio Ravanelli (£30,000 a week)

The White Feather has valiantly agreed to forgo a quarter of his £40,000-a-week wages to ease Derby's plight, though this is hardly generous since he's appeared just four times all season. The 34-year-old is out until March with an Achilles injury and unlikely to play for Derby again, but who can afford his wages?

Bosko Balaban (£20,000 a week)

The Croatia striker has made just eight appearances for Aston Villa since his £6m move two years ago and can leave for nothing. The 24-year-old is back on loan at Dynamo Zagreb, but the majority of his wages are being paid by Villa. No wonder the FA are suspicious.

Sergei Rebrov (£36,000 a week)

The 28-year-old striker is picking up a fortune for doing nothing at Tottenham, but potential suitors have been conspicuous by their absence. Spurs would settle for a fraction of the £11m they paid for the Ukrainian three seasons ago. Turkish club Fenerbahce want him on loan until the end of the season.
