Pardew aims for Hammers harmony

12 April 2012

West Ham manager Alan Pardew admits he faces a tough challenge to make sure the arrival of Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez does not upset the harmony at Upton Park.

Pardew was chasing a right winger when he discovered 36 hours before the transfer deadline he had the chance to sign the two Argentina internationals.

It was an opportunity Pardew could not turn down but it leaves him with a delicate man-management situation. "This represents a new challenge because the dynamics have all changed at our club," said Pardew.

Two of West Ham's best players last season, the leading scorer Marlon Harewood and central midfielder Hayden Mullins, could find themselves relegated to the bench.

Pardew added: "It will change when we walk into the training ground. These two guys are going to bring four or five agents who will get left at the door, which will be the first shock to them.

"But for my players the dynamics will be the uncertainty with these world-class players at the club.

"Is the manager going to have to play them? Those sort of things.

"The lads read the press as much as I do and they'll have their own reservations and concerns, and of course I'll have to address them all this week.

"I will have to put them at ease and say 'look, they have joined our squad and they are brilliant but you've all got to earn your right to stay in this team'.

"They are not guaranteed first team football."
