US Open 2016 tee times: Weather delays suit Lee Westwood as he watches Euro 2016

Former world No1 Lee Westwood admitted there had been a silver lining to the weather delays on day one of the US Open at Oakmont.

While others were left frustrated by conditions that saw only nine players finish their opening rounds after a series of thunderstorms, Westwood, who was two shots off the lead after ending his day at one under after 13 holes, said: “There’s nothing you can do about the weather, but at least we’ve got the Euros to watch in the delays. We managed to watch the second half of the England-Wales game, which was good, then nearly all of the Northern Ireland game and then the Germany-Poland game.”

Masters champion Danny Willett and four-times major winner Rory McIlroy, however, were facing a battle to get back into contention as organisers tried to get the tournament itself back on schedule.

While half of the 156-man field was unable to even start their rounds, Willett and McIlroy were four over par after 12 and 13 holes respectively when play was abandoned.
