NFL star Adrian Peterson in mourning after two-year-old son is 'beaten to death'

The two-year-old son of NFL star Adrian Peterson has died after allegedly being beaten by his mother's new boyfriend, according to reports in America.

Minnesota Vikings running back Peterson is mourning the death of his son, who has not been named, after the child was taken to hospital with severe head injuries following the alleged attack on Wednesday. The youngster died on Friday.

Joseph Patterson, 27, was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery and appeared in court on Friday, but he could now face additional charges over the death.

Peterson, who played in Minnesota's 34-27 win over Pittsburgh Steelers at Wembley last month, took to Twitter to thank his fans for their support following the tragedy.

He said: "Thank you to my family, my fans and fans of other teams for their support.

"The NFL is a fraternity of brothers and I am thankful for the tweets, phone calls and text messages from my fellow players.

"God Bless everyone and thank u so much."

Peterson is still expected to take part in Sunday's NFL game against Carolina Panthers.

Basketball star LeBron James posted his condolences to Peterson on Twitter.

He said: "My deepest condolences goes out to Adrian Peterson and his family! Sending prayers up for you homie! Nothing I can say can help u through.this but know I support u man!

"Having boys of my own, it hurts me to my heart and stomach for you!

"From my family we send our prayers up to your son and family! Sick for my friend."

Peterson is currently second in the NFL with 421 yards rushing and first in the league with five touchdowns.
