Jonny Bairstow has waited nearly four years to erase the pain of missing out on a Test century at Lord’s.

The England batsman roared with delight after completing his maiden hundred at the home of cricket for his country – after falling five runs short against South Africa five years ago.

Back then, Bairstow had been brought into the team to replace Kevin Pietersen, who had been dropped for that game when he was found to have sent text messages about then-captain Andrew Strauss to members of the opposition.

Bairstow made 95 and 54 as England lost the match, but the near-miss has played on his mind until he finally reached three figures against Sri Lanka on day one of the Third Investec Test.

“Why didn’t I do it four years ago?” said Bairstow. “They were five runs that loomed over me for a few years. People speculated about whether I could do it at this level so it was nice to put the record straight.

“There has been a lot of talk about my technique over a number of years but I am pleased with the way I’m striking the ball and how I’m moving.

“There will always be memories. I was so pleased with the way I played in that Test against South Africa. There were a lot of things going on at the time so to make the contributions I did was very pleasing.

“To go one step further and make a century in front of a packed house here was a very special feeling. The ovation I got was something I will never forget – a ‘pinch yourself’ moment, with goosebumps.”

Bairstow was dropped when had made 11 and survived a reviewed lbw decision on 56 by the tiniest of margins. “It’s not my fault he dropped it,” answered the wicketkeeper-batsman when asked about Shaminda Eranga’s blunder.

“I was happy to spend more time in the middle and score the runs I have, but there is still a long way to go.”

Bairstow will resume 107 not out after England closed 279 for six. Sri Lanka, who are 2-0 down in the three-match series, could be happy with their efforts but may live to regret the reprieve they granted Bairstow.

Spinner Rangana Herath, who took two for 45, said: “It cost a lot. We dropped chances in the Second Test at Durham as well so we need to improve in all three departments.”
