Dwain Chambers funding snub

14 October 2013

Dwain Chambers is among the top names to have missed out on funding from UK Athletics for the coming season.

The 35-year-old was part of the 4x100 relay team that finished third at the World Championships in Moscow, only to be disqualified for a botched changeover. Chambers also reached the final of the individual event.

He has been used to competing without funding in the past following his drugs ban and has pledged to continue competing.

The World Class Performance Programme, announced today, shows a shift in funding criteria for 2013-14 with UK Sport pushing for athletes who are genuine medal contenders at Olympic and world level. Triple jumper Yamile Aldama, Welsh sprinter Christian Malcolm and distance runner Jo Pavey have also missed out.

UKA, funded by the National Lottery, chose 22 athletes, including gold medallists Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Greg Rutherford, plus athletes that came to the fore in 2013 such as James Dasaolu and Adam Gemili.

In addition, there are 25 athletes on the Paralympic programme, including David Weir and Hannah Cockroft.

British Athletics director Neil Black said: “I am confident 2014 will bring further success in what will be another extremely busy season.”
