As England prepare to pull out of their winter tour to Zimbabwe on moral grounds, we look at other historical sporting boycotts.

1956: Egypt, Iraq and Lebanon boycott Melbourne Olympics in protest over Suez Crisis; Switzerland and Holland withdraw over Soviet invasion of Hungary.

1968: United Nations call for a boycott of South African sports bodies that practise apartheid.

1976: African nations boycott Montreal Olympics after IOC refuse to ban New Zealand for rugby tour of South Africa.

1980: U.S., West Germany and Japan boycott Moscow Olympics over Russian invasion of Afghanistan.

1984: Soviet Bloc stay away from Los Angeles Olympics.

1986: Lions cancel tour of South Africa.
