One-way traffic as Authorized goes odds-on

13 April 2012

Authorized is predicted to become the best backed Derby contender of all time as major betting firms made him the odds-on favourite.

Trading was described as 'one-way traffic' as the prospect of soft ground at Epsom with an unsettled week ahead seemed to strengthen the case of the Dante Stakes winner, who has the support of jockey Frankie Dettori's fan club.

Peter Chapple-Hyam trained Authorized

Unlike some runners, soft going will hold no fears for the colt trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam (above). He won last season's Racing Post Trophy in testing conditions.

Of the big firms, only Coral are holding Authorized at evens and they expect to be odds-on by the day in a gamble likely to eclipse the successful 2004 plunge on North Light and Kieren Fallon.

Spokesman David Stevens said: "Frankie Dettori is the only jockey the wider public know and he is on the best horse."

Nineteen possibles remain in the race with John Gosden deciding not to make a £75,000 supplementary entry with Dante runner-up Raincoat.
