O'Leary: We must spend

David O'Leary admits "improvement is needed all over the squad" at Aston Villa and has welcomed the news that funds will be available during the transfer window.

After Doug Ellis's statement O'Leary said: "It is nice to read that the chairman is saying that there might be funds available.

"I want to take the club forward. It is going to be very hard to crack - but I am ambitious to do it."

Villa head for Newcastle tomorrow with fitness doubts over captain Olof Mellberg and striker Darius Vassell.
