No luck for Black Cats

Sunderland's miserable start in the Coca-Cola Championship continued as they crashed to a 3-2 defeat against Plymouth at the Stadium of Light.

The winless Wearsiders led early on through Daryl Murphy but David Norris equalised with a speculative effort and Barry Hayles seized on a poor back pass by Kenny Cunningham to put Plymouth ahead.

Stephen Elliott thought he had reprieved the home side with a 67th-minute equaliser but Nick Chadwick took advantage of some poor defending to win the game eight minutes from time.

Luton missed the chance to claim the outright lead as they threw away a two-goal lead to lose at Norwich.

The Hatters had gone 2-0 ahead at Carrow Road after a superb strike from Rowan Vine and a second from substitute Dean Morgan. But the Canaries roared back into life with three goals in the space of 14 minutes to claim an unlikely win. Darren Huckerby pulled one back after 57 minutes before Gary Croft levelled and Rob Earnshaw put the home side ahead when he pounced on a rebound.

Ten-man Burnley remained unbeaten as they snatched an undeserved 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls twice hit the bar in the first and had a goal disallowed before Steven MacLean put them ahead from the penalty spot on 67 minutes. Yet the Clarets responded to claim a draw through James O'Connor in the 82nd minute and they held on despite the late sending-off of Andy Gray.

Leicester won for the first time this season as Patrick Kisnorbo and Stephen Hughes goals earned them a 3-1 victory over Ipswich.

Two first-half goals gave QPR a 2-0 win over Southend at Loftus Road. Rangers had wasted a string of chances before midfielder Martin Rowlands let fly from distance 14 minutes before the interval. Nick Ward doubled the lead 10 minutes later with his first goal for the club.

Michael Chopra netted the only goal after 79 minutes as Cardiff beat Coventry 1-0 at Ninian Park while Southampton had to settle for a 0-0 draw at home to West Brom.
