1968:

1987: Makes Essex debut.

1989: Cricket Writers' Club young cricketer of the year.

1990: Controversially chosen for England tour to West Indies ahead of Michael Atherton. Played both innings of fifth Test in Antigua with broken wrist and misses most of next season.

1993: Earns England recall for last four Tests of Ashes series.

1996: Appointed Essex vice-captain. Recalled to England side and scores two centuries in series win over India. Chosen as vice-captain for England tour to Zimbabwe and New Zealand.

1997: Hits career-best 207 against Australia at Edgbaston to help England win first Test but defeated in series.

1998: Century in final Test against West Indies as England lose series 3-1. Atherton quits as captain, Alec Stewart appointed. Plays all five Tests in 3-1 series victory over South Africa.

1998-9: Ashes series defeat in Australia.

1999: Appointed Essex captain. Tops England batting averages in disappointing World Cup campaign.

June 24 - Appointed England captain but cannot prevent side losing Test series with New Zealand 2-1.

1999-2000: Enjoyed highly successful tour of South Africa, even though side were beaten in the Test series.

2000: Hands over Essex captaincy to Ronnie Irani. England win 1-0 win in series against Zimbabwe. Leads England to first series victory over West Indies on home soil since 1969.

2000: Secures 1-0 series win over Pakistan.

2001: England win 2-1 in Sri Lanka after losing first Test. Breaks thumbs in first Test of drawn series with Pakistan. England lose Ashes 4-1. Oversees 5-0 whitewash of Zimbabwe in one-day series before losing Test series to India 1-0.

2002: Awarded OBE in New Year's Honours List. Oversees 3-3 draw in one-day series against India. Draws Test series against New Zealand. Leads England to 2-0 Test series win over Sri Lanka. Draws Test series against India.

2002-3: Leads England to 4-1 thrashing in Ashes.

March 4 - England bow out of World Cup and Hussain quits as one-day captain. Wants to continue as Test skipper.

July 28 - Steps down as England Test captain with Michael Vaughan taking over.
