McLaren promise they will battle to put the brakes on Red Bull's charge

Swimming in success: Mark Webber after his victory at the Monaco Grand Prix
13 April 2012

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh today insisted Red Bull are far from unbeatable and has pledged to give Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton cars capable of fighting for the title.

Mark Webber led Sebastian Vettel home in a Red Bull one-two at Monaco yesterday while Hamilton could only finish fifth and Button retired after just two laps. The defending champion dropped from first to fourth in the standings after his engine overheated because the team forgot to remove a bung protecting the radiator on his car before the race.

Whitmarsh admitted "human error is always frustrating" but pledged to bounce back at the Turkish Grand Prix in a fortnight.

He said: "Red Bull have a lot of downforce and they're very strong everywhere at the moment — that's pretty clear — and they've proved they can be competitive at any track but I think we knew that even before this race.

"The championship is always very tough and this is no exception. It's certainly not the case that Red Bull are unbeatable. But we have to keep pushing, we have to improve and have to get quicker. We've got a lot of work to do but we'll keep pushing and keep both Jenson and Lewis in the title race."

For all Whitmarsh's fighting talk, there are no major upgrades planned for Istanbul, so McLaren look unlikely to close the gap on Red Bull in Turkey.

And Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who drove a stunning race from the back of the grid to finish sixth, has already conceded defeat at the next two races insisting they will be little more than a battle of the Red Bulls.

The double world champion said: "Red Bull at the moment are very dominant and very difficult to catch. That will not be achievable at least not in the next two or three grands prix. They have a big advantage in terms of performance especially in qualifying. It's going to be difficult for all of us to catch them in such a short time."

Red Bull boss Christian Horner celebrated the team's one-two by jumping into the swimming pool of the team's motorhome at the harbour in Monaco but is taking nothing for granted.

"We must never underestimate our opponents," he said. "We must remember that we are racing teams of the calibre of Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes and it would be very foolish to underestimate rivals like that.

"We have been fast at every race track we have been to so far. Six poles as well as our race pace is a testament to the flexibility of the car. There is no reason why we shouldn't carry on this performance and establish ourselves as front-runners again in Turkey."
