Manchester United have identified Idrissa Gueye as a potential replacement for the departing Ander Herrera.

The Everton midfielder, who was the subject of a January bid from Paris Saint-Germain, is now being considered by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Norwegian draws up his list of summer targets.

Man Utd’s manager needs someone to fill the void due to be left by Herrera, who is set to complete a move to PSG as a free agent at the end of the season.

And Gueye has emerged as a leading contender, with Solskjaer exploring the possibility of luring him to Old Trafford as part of his summer overhaul.

United’s refusal to meet Herrera’s wage demands – believed to be the best part of £200,000-a-week – has convinced the Spaniard to walk away after five years at the club.

That has left Solskjaer looking for an experienced replacement, with Gueye fitting the criteria.

The 29-year-old is Premier League proven, with his outstanding performances for Everton prompting interest from PSG.

Herrera’s proposed move to the Parc de Princes is likely to end the French champions’ interest, leaving United ready to step in.

The Senegal international could be available for less than £30million in a summer where Solskjaer hopes to stamp his mark on the squad he inherited from Jose Mourinho.

United could sign as many as five new players when the transfer window opens, including a right back, centre back, two midfielders and a right winger.

Declan Rice is another holding midfield target, along with Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez. But Gueye represents a cheaper option – particularly if West Ham refuse to sell Rice so soon after the 20-year-old’s breakthrough.

Solskjaer also wants an attacking midfielder, with Sporting Lisbon captain Bruno Fernandes being considered.
