MacLagan just fails in Classic encounter

13 April 2012

Britain's Miles MacLagan suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the first round of the Legg Mason Classic in Washington.

The 28-year-old right-hander lost a finalset tie-break to Alex Kim. The American won the first set 6-4 but MacLagan hit back to take the second set 6-3.

The match had been delayed for more than three-and-a-half hours due to rain and the final set didn't start until midnight. With both players serving well the set went to a tie-break which was dominated by Kim, who won it 7-3 and the match 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.

Greg Rusedski faces Ivan Miranda in the second round after the Peruvian battled back from a set down to beat Karol Beck of Slovakia 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Meanwhile, Mary Pierce cruised into the second round of the Acura Classic in San Diego defeating fellow Frenchwoman Virginia Razzano 6-1, 6-3. Pierce will now meet Conchita Martinez of Spain in the second round.

Eighteen-year-old Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova won a battle of the teenagers beating 16-year-old American Leslie Koffi, a wild card entry, 6-2, 6-1.

Kuznetsova's reward was to be a secondround clash with Serena Williams but the world No1 pulled out through injury and has been replaced by 'lucky loser' Meilen Tu of America.
