Luke Donald below par but he still edges ahead

13 April 2012

Luke Donald overcame illness to finish third at the Canadian Open and strengthen his bid for a Ryder Cup spot.

A final round 66 saw the Briton finish on 12 under par, two adrift of Sweden's Carl Pettersson, at Toronto's St George's Golf & Country Club.

Donald said: "I was struggling all week with sinus infections and felt just a little bit run down. I didn't hole enough putts here but it's still been a great week for me."

He has edged further ahead of Edoardo Molinari, his closest rival for a spot in Europe's team for the October contest at Celtic Manor.

The Italian received fewer points for being third at the Scandinavian Masters in Stockholm, two shots behind winner Richard S Johnson. The Swede closed on 11 under.
