London Marathon bosses are hoping to lure Mo Farah back to the capital next year and are confident the Londoner can make a winning return despite a disappointing debut three years ago.

Farah has already revealed he plans to quit the track following his trademark 5,000m and 10,000m double at London 2017.

But London Marathon bosses will try to persuade the 34-year-old to carry on running over 26.2 miles, with race director Hugh Brasher even tipping Farah to attempt the distance at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Farah finished eighth in his first London Marathon in 2014.

But Brasher told Standard Sport: “We’d be delighted to have Mo in 2018, and of course he could be a winner here.

"Past 5,000m and 10,000m gold medallists have made the transition.

"Just look at Eliud Kipchoge [a world champion and Olympic medallist over 5,000m], who is absolutely the best marathon runner in the world. Of course, Mo could follow that."
