Thiago Alcantara has informed Bayern Munich he wants to leave the club, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed.

The former Barcelona midfielder has a year left on his current deal with the Bundesliga champions, and has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool this summer.

Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan of the Spaniard, a fact he has declared publicly , and reports in German say that Thiago has his heart set on a move to Anfield.

Standard Sport understands that Liverpool do hold interest in the player, but a deal is unlikely to materialise unless an important midfielder leaves the club this summer.

Rummenigge, speaking at Leroy Sane’s unveiling following his transfer from Manchester City, confirmed that Thiago is looking for a new challenge – but insisted that, as yet, no offers have been forthcoming.

"[Bayern sporting director] Hasan [Salihamidzic] had talks with Thiago," Rummenigge told reporters.

"Curiously they were always very positive. But he told Hasan some time ago that he wants to do something new to finish his career.

"So far no club has contacted us. We don't know if he's settled things with a new club."
