Lehmann's 106 helps Yorkshire to draw

13 April 2012

Darren Lehmann hit his fourth century of the season to steer Yorkshire to a comfortable draw against champions Surrey.

The outcome was a bitter disappointment to Surrey, who have still won only two championship games this season.

Indeed, had 22 overs not been lost to rain in the morning, Yorkshire might well have launched a challenge for a victory target of 356.

When stumps were drawn, Yorkshire had reached 244 for two in the 96th over of their innings.

Initially, it looked as if they might struggle to save the game. Resuming on 50 for one - still 306 runs away from victory - they lost Anthony McGrath lbw to Martin Bicknell with only four runs added to the overnight score.

Lehmann and opener Matthew Wood both had to fight for survival against Bicknell and Ed Giddins in the 25 minutes before rain caused a long interruption.

When play resumed the bowling did not carry the same threat and while Wood played the anchor role, Lehmann launched into a bolder innings, reaching his half-century from 78 balls.

He produced the star performance again as he cruised to his fourth century of the summer from 181 balls with 13 fours.

At the close, Lehmann was unbeaten on 106 while Wood, having batted throughout the innings, was 85 not out with nine fours from 277 deliveries.
