Lee asks for more sunshine

13 April 2012

Lee Westwood is hoping for better weather after grabbing a share of the first-round lead in the £1.3 million Nedbank Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City.

The new European No 1 shot a seven-under-par 65 to finish alongside Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal.

But Westwood said: "I hope the course gets a little harder as it dries out from the rain, because I think I can get better all the time on it."

Ernie Els, who set a tournament record 25-under-par 263 on his way to victory last year, birdied the last two holes for a round of 66.

Darren Clarke was on 68, with Zimbabwe's Nick Price and Colin Montgomerie on 69.

Meanwhile, Sergio Garcia led by one shot after shooting a seven-under 65 in the Williams World Challenge in California.

Vijay Singh birdied five of the last six holes for a 66, two better than Tiger Woods.
