Lay off Fletcher - Jones

12 April 2012

England seamer Simon Jones has told the snipers to lay off Duncan Fletcher, who he believes is the best coach in the world.

Fletcher has been under fire for his selections during the Ashes tour of Australia, but Jones, who played a key role in last year's successful bid to regain the Ashes urn, believes the flak is unwarranted.

He told BBC Wales: "It's a sad state of affairs. Look how well they did last year. There were no complaints about Duncan last year and now we've lost a couple of games they're on his back. Fletch is probably the best coach in the world, I think."

Jones added: "I can't believe what's happened really. The press and the media like to jump on people's backs and Fletch is a strong enough character to ignore it and hopefully that'll bring out the best in the boys."

Jones accepts England have underperformed so far Down Under but has not given up hope of overturning the 2-0 deficit in the five-Test series.

"It's been tough. The boys haven't done very well," he said.

"The Aussies are obviously really hungry to get the Ashes back, which is a massive thing for us as well. We've got three Tests left and hopefully the boys can pull something out of the bag."
