13 April 2012

Russia's Anna Kournikova moved into the quarter-finals of the Toray Pan Pacific tournament in Tokyo today, but she needed two tie-breaks to see off compatriot Elena Dementieva 7-6, 7-6.

Kournikova, who has had eight months out with a foot injury, said: "This is one of the best matches since my comeback, if not the best."

She now faces Luxembourg's Anne Kremer - a 7-5, 6-2 winner over No2 seed Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia.

Monica Seles, the No 3 seed, crushed Belgium's Els Callens 6-2, 6-3 and plays fellow American Alexandra Stevenson.

Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn edged past sixth seed Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 and will meet top seed Martina Hingis tomorrow.

Italy's Silvia Farina Elia completes the last-eight line-up. She beat compatriot Rita Grande 7-5, 6-4 and now faces No4 seed Sandrine Testud of France.
