Khan clash is delayed

14 April 2012

Amir Khan's amateur farewell against his Cuban Olympic conqueror Mario Kindelan will not now take place on April 30.

Cuban team chief Angel Iglesias Guerra said today that date for the projected show in Bolton - which was announced by promoter Frank Warren last week - was "absolutely impossible".

Guerra said logistics would not enable Kindelan to return so soon to Britain, where he is currently preparing to fight Birmingham's Frankie Gavin in tomorrow's international contest in Liverpool.

However Guerra made it clear that double Olympic champion Kindelan is eager to meet Khan again and would be willing and able to come back for a big show involving a number of other Cubans this summer.

Guerra said: "If Mario did get the chance to fight Amir Khan again it would be his chance to retire in style.

"We would hope it could happen in May or June as part of a more comprehensive bill involving other members of the team."

Kindelan, who is also due to fight in Dublin next week before returning home to Cuba, paid tribute to 18-year-old Khan who he beat 30-22 in the Athens final.

Kindelan said: "Amir Khan is a great boxer and I respect him a lot. It is his decision about turning professional but if he stays on in an amateur capacity he will get a lot of glory."

Promoter Warren, with whom Khan is on the verge of turning professional, admitted today he was disappointed by the Cubans' announcement.

But Warren added: "May would be the perfect month for us to do the fight and I have no problems with moving the date back.

"It is great to hear that Mario wants the fight because it is the biggest amateur fight out there and we will make it happen."
