Jordan uses Max factor

The mystery over Simon Jordan's future as Crystal Palace chairman took a new twist today after it emerged that the former mobile phone tycoon has hired publicist Max Clifford to act as his media adviser.

Although Clifford says Jordan is not actively looking for a way out, he confirmed that he would be prepared to sell the club if the right buyer came along or if another individual or consortium put in a lump sum to run it as a joint venture.

News of Jordan's relationship with Clifford, which started a month ago, comes as latest accounts for the newly promoted Premiership side reveal the extent of the financial problems at the club. For the year ended June 2003, Palace made losses of £9.2m and had net debts of £9.1m.

It is not Clifford's first involvement with a football club chairman. He has previously worked for Fulham chairman Mohammed Fayed and ex-Leeds chief Peter Ridsdale.

Clifford said: "Simon Jordan is a realistic bloke and he knows that if Palace are going to make it to the top of the Premier League and stay there it will take millions of pounds. If someone is prepared to come along and offer Palace huge sums to help them do that he will be happy to sit down and talk with them. It could well be that someone wanted to join him. He has put in £30m and if another person wanted to put in that or more and it was the best for the future of the club he would be interested.

"He is not looking to get out but he is a realist. He is someone who has achieved what he set out to do."
