Injury woe for Mauresmo

12 April 2012

Amelie Mauresmo pulled out of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Thursday due to injury.

The top-seeded Frenchwoman, the reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, has a shoulder injury and has been replaced in the draw by American lucky loser Lisa Raymond. Raymond will play Michaella Krajicek in the second round.

"I felt it first at the end of practice on Monday and I was hoping that it was nothing serious," Mauresmo said. "When I was warming up on Thursday I felt the pain again and I think I made the right decision not to play. It's disappointing, but that's the way it is."

The winner of the Raymond-Krajicek clash will face Tatiana Golovin of France, a 6-4 6-3 winner over Czech lucky loser Iveta Benesova, in the quarter-finals.

Benesova had replaced Ana Ivanovic (shoulder) in the draw.

Dinara Safina's first tournament since entering the top 10 also ended prematurely.

The sixth seed from Russia, Safina was routed by Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 6-2 6-2 in the second round of the Tier II event.

On Monday, Safina moved to a career-best 10th in the world rankings.

Hantuchova awaits either another Russian, fourth seed Nadia Petrova, or Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the last eight.
