Home favourite Stokes gets nod

England selected Ben Stokes in front of his home Durham crowd for the opening one-day international against India.

Stokes made his England debut against Ireland last week and, despite not being able to bowl due to a finger injury, the all-rounder retained his place against the world champions.

England were, however, without Graeme Swann after he had been struck down by a stomach bug over the past two days meaning Samit Patel was trusted with the slow bowling duties.

Ian Bell was also listed to bat at four - in place of the rested Kevin Pietersen - although he would have to wait his chance after skipper Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bowl under cloudy skies.

India made one significant omission with Sachin Tendulkar left out - meaning his wait for a 100th international century will continue - and Parthiv Patel called in.

Tendulkar's absence also meant an injury-depleted India fielded just four of the team that won the World Cup final in April.
