Hoddle is rocked by injury to Campbell

Glenn Hoddle could go into his first match as Tottenham's new manager - the FA Cup semi-final against north London rivals Arsenal - without his captain Sol Campbell.

The Newham-born defender, who is expected to sign a new contract with the White Hart Lane club in the near future, injured an ankle in the first half of England's 3-1 World Cup qualifying group win over Albania.

Today the 22-year-old centre-back admitted: "The ankle is very swollen and painful."

Campbell, who was replaced by Manchester United's Wes Brown in the 25th minute, looks a nonstarter for this weekend's Premiership encounter against Arsenal and said: "It's too early to say whether I'll be fit for the semi-final but the ankle doesn't look too good at the moment.

"I went up for a header and went over on the ankle as I landed."

Campbell, who was limping heavily after last night's match, faces intensive treatment in an effort to be fit for the semi-final at Old Trafford on Sunday week.

He has ten days in which to recover from the injury, however, and will be hoping there is no serious ligament damage.
