Hero Wilko returns at last

Jonny Wilkinson made a 40-minute comeback appearance for Newcastle last night, nearly eight months after needing a neck operation to save his rugby career.

The man who kicked England to World Cup glory scored a penalty, made one trademark bone-crunching tackle and was generally fully involved as Newcastle launched their pre-season preparations against Connacht in Galway.

During Wilkinson's prolonged absence from the game, England won just three out of eight Tests, but last night's signs were encouraging, and he can expect to take a second step on the comeback trail when Newcastle tackle Munster in Limerick next Monday.

Saracens, meanwhile, have signed winger Tevita Vaikona from rugby league side Bradford Bulls.

The Tongan international, who had a year left to run on his contract, was voted the best winger in the world two years ago.
