Heath hopes leaders can hit winning streak

14 April 2012

Heath Streak is confident he could still celebrate winning the Frizzell County Championship title with Warwickshire later today.

The Division One leaders are almost certain to be crowned 2004 champions but may have to wait another week unless Streak & Co bowl out Worcestershire at New Road this afternoon. Warwickshire go into the final day 138 runs ahead with seven second-innings wickets remaining.

Former Zimbabwe captain Streak said: "We are going to have to work hard and we are not going to get ahead of ourselves, but if we take each ball at a time and play good cricket we are good enough to win.

"It is now going to be tough work for us in the first session but if we can set them 250-plus, I think that is going to prove very competitive."

Warwickshire's hopes of an easy win were wrecked when they failed in their attempt to enforce the follow-on, due mainly to a career-best 63 from Matt Mason.

Ali Brown's undefeated 144 revived Surrey after they had been in trouble on 58 for four at Old Trafford. With Tim Murtagh sharing in an unbeaten eighth-wicket stand of 121, they will resume on 346 for seven against relegation-threatened Lancashire.

Middlesex received the totesport League Division Two trophy before setting off in chase of Sussex's 217 for eight at Hove last night and were promptly skittled out for 85.

Today's fixtures: Frizzell County Championship, Div 1 - Worcester: Warwicks 460 & 94-3, Worcs 416. Old Trafford: Surrey 346-7 v Lancs. Canterbury: Kent v Northants. Div 2 - Leicester: Hampshire 321 & 56-1, Leics 282. Scarborough: Durham 325 & 253-5, Yorkshire 200. Chelmsford: Essex 445-4 v Glamorgan. Trent Bridge: Notts v Somerset.
