Hantuchova's badly timed exit

13 April 2012

Daniela Hantuchova learned a tough lesson at the Acura Classic in San Diego yesterday.

The 19-year-old Slovakian lost her secondround match with Ai Sugiyama - after taking too much time between points.

Hantuchova was serving to save match point when umpire Denis Overburg awarded a second penalty against her for time wasting, giving Sugiyama a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 victory.

A first point-penalty had been issued against her in the previous game.

"I was not stalling for time, just thinking about what to do," said Hantuchova. Players are given 20 seconds between points.
