Greece a long way off for Seaman

13 April 2012

Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman suffered a shoulder injury in training today, prompting doubts about his fitness for next Wednesday's qualifier in Greece. It is not expected that Seaman will train tomorrow, although the England camp are optimistic that the 37-year-old will be ready to resume training on Sunday and play in Athens.

Eriksson's other goalkeeping options are Leeds's Nigel Martyn and Aston Villa's David James.

West Ham's 19-year-old midfield pair Joe Cole and Michael Carrick, meanwhile, have been released from the senior squad and will instead play for Howard Wilkinson's England U-21 team against the Greeks on Tuesday night.

Cole and Carrick both played as substitutes in the 4-0 win over Mexico at Pride Park last Friday.

"Neither player would have been on the substitutes bench for the senior game," said Eriksson. "So playing for the under 21s instead will be valuable experience for both of them."
