Jon Rahm returned to the world No1 spot following his third PGA Tour win of 2023 in a thrilling head to head with Max Homa at the Genesis Invitational.

The Spaniard, who began his final round with a three-stroke lead, fell behind Homa with six holes remaining but produced a series of stunning strokes to take a two-shot victory.

He holed a 45-foot putt on the 14th and came within a whisker of a hole in one two holes later to give him breathing space over his American rival.

Two final pars were enough to seal a 10th career PGA Tour title by two strokes. It also edged him past his countryman Seve Ballesteros for career PGA Tour titles.

“Beating Seve, I know he didn’t play full time on the PGA Tour and I know five of those wins are majors but, still, to reach that milestone of double digit wins is pretty incredible,” said Rahm.

“And to do it on a a golf course with this legacy, this history and hosted by the man himself, Tiger Woods, it’s a true honour.”

Woods, who had done well to make the cut in his first tournament in seven months, carded a final-round 73 to end one-under par for the tournament.

The 15-time major champion has set his sights on playing all four majors in 2023 and maybe two or three other events as he battles his way back from a career-threatening leg injury following his 2021 car accident.
