Gilbert hails Murray

14 April 2012

Andy Murray's new coach Brad Gilbert believes the British number one showed "a little braveheart" in his win over world number one Roger Federer in Cincinnati on Wednesday night.

The 19-year-old defeated the Wimbledon champion in straight sets, securing a 7-5 6-4 success.

"It was unbelievable. He broke Federer's serve seven times and there were a lot of ebb and flow in the match," Gilbert told BBC Scotland. "It was a great win for the kid and, hopefully, that will just boost his confidence even more that he can play with anyone in the world."

Gilbert added: "He has just got to keep winning matches because the more he wins, the better position he will be in for seeding at grand slam tournaments and moving up the rankings.

"The most important thing when you are 19 is to keep getting better."

After the game, Gilbert revealed Murray had been feeling some of the strain of two "gruelling" matches against Federer and Tim Henman.

He added: "He was pretty calm and relaxed. He is a little fatigued because he had a gruelling match with Tim on Tuesday.

"He has played 12 matches in the last 15 days so he is a little worn out - but there is more business to do."
