It was flattering to read Michael Vaughan calling for me to be brought back by England for the Second Test at Lord’s. I made my Test debut under his captaincy in October 2003 and it’s pleasing that he still sees something in me.
I’ve said here before that I’m confident I could do a good job in Test cricket and that still applies, although, if I’m being truthful, I never really believed I would be called up. Simon Kerrigan is a spin bowler I rate very highly and I would like nothing better for him to perform well in this series.
I think experience is massively important when considering players for international cricket — and I’m not saying that simply because I have plenty. When you reach the stage of your career where you understand your game, cricket rewards you.
If you look at Australia, it’s quite rare for them to pluck a relatively inexperienced youngster and lob them into a Test. Chris Rogers and Brad Haddin are extremely experienced and they had huge success during the Ashes last winter.
I can’t stress enough, however, just how much I’m enjoying playing for Surrey and watching our excellent young players develop.
There is nothing better than seeing young players start to understand the way they play and begin to make the right decisions on the field.
Our coach, Graham Ford, must take huge credit for the way these youngsters have progressed this summer and I’m sure they would all say the same. Mark my words: they are only going to get better.
