Freund in a Euro lament

13 April 2012

Steffen Freund says any lingering hopes Tottenham had of qualifying for Europe were shattered by Chelsea.

The injured German midfielder believes Chelsea's 3-0 victory at White Hart lane on Tuesday effectively brought the curtain down on their season.

Spurs, who have a tough match at Liverpool on Sunday, can only hope that European qualification goes down to seventh place in the Premiership for them to make it into the UEFA Cup.

However, they also face difficult games against Aston Villa, Leicester and champions Manchester United with a squad severely depleted by injuries.

Freund said: "I think we needed to finish in sixth place and that was our big chance. We now need a lot of luck. First we have to hope that qualification goes down to seventh place and for that I think we need Leeds to win the Champions League and Arsenal and Liverpool to finish second and third."
