Eric Dier praised England's "incredible" goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as the pair played major roles in sealing a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Colombia to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

Harry Kane's second-half penalty looked set to be sending England through to a World Cup quarter-final against Sweden, but Yerry Mina's injury-time header sent the game to extra time.

With neither side able to find a goal in the extra 30 minutes, England won the shootout 4-3 with Dier and Pickford the dual heroes.

The first five penalties were all finely taken and successful, Kane and Marcus Rashford on target for England, but Jordan Henderson was first to err.

He struck cleanly but at a bad height and David Ospina saved.

Mateus Uribe hit the under side of the bar with the next attempt and Trippier Trippier buried his in response.

Pickford then produced a brilliant one-handed effort to deny Carlos Bacca leaving Dier to win it.

The Tottenham man did so, squeezing it low past Ospina and sparking joyous celebrations.

Dier said of Pickford to BBC Sport: "He was incredible, he's a fantastic goalkeeper and he was fantastic in the penalty shootout. He's been fantastic in training for them and he's taken it into the game."

On his own pressure moment, the Tottenham midfielder added: "It was a nervous one, I've never had a situation like that before.

"I felt like I had to score after the header I missed at the end (of extra time), and I'm just thankful I scored that one."

Speaking about his save from Bacca, Pickford said: "I did all my research. I've got power and agility.

"I don't care if I'm not the biggest keeper because it's about being there in the moment and making the save and I was.

"It's all about the set position and I got a hand to it. We knew we had this game, even if it had to go to penalties, we knew we were capable of winning."
