West Ham are hoping for a breakthrough between Brentford and Said Benrahma in order to complete a deal for the Algerian forward before Friday’s deadline.

The Hammers have agreed a deal thought to be worth up to £30million including add-ons for the Brentford winger and were hopeful of booking in a medical on Wednesday once he had returned from international duty.

However, the deal has hit a snag with issues arising between the 25-year-old, who scored 17 goals and laid on a further nine in the Championship last season, and the Bees.

Benrahma is set to be involved in Algeria’s friendly against Mexico, taking place in The Hauge, on Tuesday evening before returning to London to push through the move. West Ham remain confident of completing the signing before Friday’s 5pm domestic deadline.

Should the west Londoners not be able to iron out the issues with their player, West Ham could return with another offer for Bournemouth’s Joshua King having had a £13million approach knocked back over the weekend.

The Hammers have at least finally added to their defensive cover. After numerous bids for a number of other targets fell short, Watford’s Craig Dawson has joined on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

Manager David Moyes said: “It’s no secret that we have been trying to add more quality to the squad in defensive positions, not only for the longer-term but also to ensure we are well protected right now, and the opportunity bring in Craig on loan was an addition that will make the group stronger through this period.

“I know he will be a great addition to the dressing-room – he is a committed and determined character. We wish Craig all the best during his time here and I look forward to working with him for the rest of the season.”
