Wayne Rooney could be in contention to play in Manchester United's FA Cup clash with West Ham after making his first appearance since February in the club's Under-21 win over Middlesbrough on Monday night.

The Red Devils skipper was named in Warren Joyce's starting XI for the game at Old Trafford following his recovery from a knee injury that has kept him sidelined for two months.

Rooney went on to play 60 minutes before being substituted off for Axel Tuanzebe, which could result in the forward featuring on Wednesday when United travel to face West Ham in their FA Cup sixth-round match at Upton Park after a sharp display against Middlesbrough.

The 30-year-old's return to action will certainly be welcomed by United boss Louis van Gaal, who watched on in the stands as United's Under-21 side clinched a 1-0 win courtesy of a Paddy McNair goal, and England coach Roy Hodgson.

The Three Lions boss will be hoping to take Rooney with him to the European Championships in France, which begins on Friday 10 June.
