Virgil van Dijk breaks silence on Twitter after Liverpool move collapses

Mournful: Virgil van Dijk on a private jet

Oh, won't someone think of poor Virgil van Dijk?

Amid the news and reaction to Liverpool ending their interest after Southampton reported the club for 'tapping up', it seems the welfare of the player has been forgotten.

In the immediate aftermath of Liverpool issuing an apology, the £60million target reportedly removed mention of Southampton from his Twitter and changing his avatar to one of him in a Netherlands kit. The bio was quickly changed back but the picture remained.

Virgil hasn't stopped there, however, and this afternoon posted a picture of himself looking mournfully out of the window of a private jet with a simple 'thoughtful' emoji. Sadness in his eyes.

So what happens once Van Dijk has departed the plane and represented his country?

Well, a move to Chelsea does not look like a possibility either.

Standard Sport understands Antonio Conte will not reignite his interest in the centre-back despite Liverpool ending their interest.

The Blues are looking for a replacement for John Terry.
