USA match-winner Alex Morgan’s tea-drinking celebration has been branded “distasteful” by England forward Lianne Sanderson.

Morgan sipped an imaginary cup of tea in what has been seen as a swipe at England.

“I expected Alex to grab a goal but I am not that happy with that celebration,” said Sanderson.

“I could be wrong but it is based upon playing against England and we love our tea in England.

I am not a tea” drinker but that’s what we’re connected with so I think it’s a little bit distasteful.”

Morgan explained the celebration was a response to everything “thrown at” her team at the World Cup. She said: “I feel like we did not take an easy route through this tournament and ‘that is the tea’.”

England fans jumped to express their dismay on Twitter, with one fan describing the celebration as “disrespectful”.

Another fan tweeted: "Wow Alex Morgan's celebration was disrespectful and classless. They are getting way too cocky."

But US fans loved the move by Morgan, which came on her 30th birthday. One fan described the celebration as “iconic”, with another saying it was “unreal trolling”.
