Unai Emery has says he believes that Aaron Ramsey will stay at Arsenal – and that he could even become captain.

Ramsey has less than twelve months to run on his current deal, and Arsenal are keen to avoid a repeat of the saga which saw both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez start last season within the final year of their deals.

Yesterday, Ramsey himself said that no agreement had been reached between the club and his representatives and that he was unsure when talks would be completed.

However, after today’s International Champions Cup match against Atletico Madrid, Emery backed Ramsey to sign a new deal.

“Aaron is an important player,” he told football.london. “The contract is between the club and the player. I want him to stay and I think he will stay.”

Emery also reiterated his desire to create a leadership group of several players, and said that Ramsey, who started today’s game as skipper, would be among them.

“I want five captains in the team,” he said. “Aaron has the condition to be one of the captains.”

Arsenal’s club captain, Per Mertesacker retired at the end of last season to become head of the academy, while Laurent Koscielny, the on-field skipper, is expected to be out until the winter because of an Achilles injury.

In his absence, the armband was worn by a number of senior players, including Petr Cech and Jack Wilshere, but the latter has left for West Ham and Cech’s place is likely to come under pressure from new signing Bernd Leno.
