Jose Mourinho has told Manchester United he wants new deals for Juan Mata and Ander Herrera.

The United manager is determined to keep the Spanish duo at the club because of their influence on a dressing room that has been in turmoil this season.

The pair are out of contract next summer – but Mourinho has advised executive vice chairman Ed Woodward to offer new terms to two players who are now considered fringe members of his squad.

Mourinho similarly pushed to keep Marouane Fellaini at Old Trafford last season, with the club’s hierarchy eventually relenting over a two-year extension.

It remains to be seen how hard the Portuguese will fight for Mata and Herrera – but he recognises their importance off the pitch, as well as on it.

They are hugely popular within the club – as well as being cult figures among supporters.

Crucially Mourinho believes they are a positive force on teammates at a time when he has repeatedly questioned the attitudes of his players.

With rifts running through the squad after a turbulent start to the season, Mata and Herrera are seen as harmonising figures.

But it is not their personalities alone that have convinced Mourinho they have longer futures at the club.

Mata remains one of United’s most creative options, while Herrera’s versatility and ability to carry out detailed tactical instructions are valued.

But the importance of their standing within the dressing room cannot be underestimated.

Mata was actually one of the players singled out for criticism by Mourinho this season – but has gone on to impress his manager with his response, which included a goal in the thrilling 3-2 win against Newcastle before the international break.

United have made steps to address the futures of several players approaching the end of their contracts in recent weeks.

There is confidence Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw will sign extensions, while it’s hoped Herrera will follow suit.

Negotiations are ongoing with David de Gea.
