John Terry prices himself out of move to Brighton as former Chelsea captain asks for £100,000 a week
Brighton have withdrawn their interest in former Chelsea captain John Terry over his wage demands for £100,000 a week.
Terry is available as a free agent after ending his 22-year association with the champions.
The 36-year-old is leaning towards playing for another Premier League club and newly promoted Brighton were among a number of top-flight sides to show an interest.
But Standard Sport understands Brighton have pulled out of the race to sign him after Terry asked for £100,000 a week.
It is believed Terry’s basic salary in his final season at Chelsea had dropped to £50,000 a week, although there were a number of add-ons depending on appearances, wins and trophies to increase that figure.
Stoke, West Brom, Swansea and Bournemouth remain keen on the centre-half, who hopes to play regular first-team football after having only a limited role last term.
Staying in England looks far more likely now than at the start of the year. The chance to secure a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League became more remote due to a new rule this season limiting clubs to just three foreign players on the pitch at any one time. Following Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup Final 10 days ago, Terry revealed he would decide his future during a week’s holiday and hinted joining a Premier League team was a possibility.
He said: “Obviously, clubs are going to be making decisions as well, so they are going to want to know.
“I always have a week off and then get back on it in the gym running, to be professional enough to be 100 per cent right for the club if I do decide that route, or whatever I decide.
“I don’t think you can ever tarnish what I’ve done here [at Chelsea]. I think the fans, whatever I decide, will support me and accept my decision. They know when you have given everything for the club, if I decide to play they will accept that decision and if I decide not to play they will accept that too.”
The former England international returned from his holiday to play in Michael Carrick’s testimonial at Old Trafford on Sunday.
