Alexis Sanchez is facing a battle to save his Manchester United career.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned the Chilean it is up to him to revive his form - insisting he won’t ‘spoon feed’ the striker.

Solskjaer is in the process of overhauling Man Utd’s failing squad, with Sanchez among the players most under threat.

The former Arsenal player has endured a miserable time in his 18 months at Old Trafford, scoring five goals in 45 games.

Solskjaer plans to build his attack around Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial next season - and insists Sanchez has to prove he can part of it once he returns for pre-season following his involvement in the Copa America.

“I will have to help…You can’t spoon feed them,” said Solskjaer.

“They’ve got to come in and grab their chances and Alexis is quality and he showed it in Copa America.

“Then he got his injury. I don’t think it’s too bad so I’m hoping he will be available for (the friendlies against) maybe Kristiansund or AC Milan so he will at least get some football before the season starts.”

Asked if he was planning on having Sanchez in his squad as of next season, Solskjaer cryptically replied: “At the moment, yes I am.”

Finding a club willing to take on the 30-year-old’s £450,000-a-week salary will be United’s biggest issue if Sanchez is to move on before the transfer window closes in less than a month.

If he does remain, Solskjaer is prepared to consider him in a centre forward role.

The Norwegian added: “The way we hope we are going to play, it doesn’t have to be a 6ft4 striker, so Alexis can be part of that forward line.”
