Tottenham's players were let down by former England manager Roy Hodgson at Euro 2016, according to former Spurs midfielder Ruel Fox.

Five of Mauricio Pochettino's young side were included in England's squad this summer but they failed to carry their impressive club form onto the international stage.

Harry Kane was singled out for particular criticism after failing to find the net for the Three Lions in France, despite finishing the Premier League season with the Golden Boot courtesy of a 25-goal haul.

However, Fox is adamant Hodgson's decision to ask Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker to stray from what had served them so well at Spurs was a mistake.

"I think forcing them to do different things did not help them at all. Hodgson let those players down," Fox told Bwin.

"These players who get called up, and the Spurs players in particular, get selected because they get the help at their clubs to succeed and the players are put in the right positions to play their best.

"When they get to the international set up, they should get the same support from Hodgson to do that and they didn’t.

"You can’t have Harry Kane taking corners and free-kicks when it’s not something he did at his club," he added.

Spurs have won four points from their opening two Premier League games this season and Fox believes the speed in which Kane and Co can forget about Euro 2016 will define the north Londoners' campaign.

The challenges facing Sam Allardyce as England manager

"The crucial thing for Spurs this season will be how quickly their English core can get the sour taste of the Euros out of their mouth.

"There’s a lot of pressure to replicate that form, considering how the likes of Kane started last season.

"There’s a lot of backlash towards them, so it’s going to take a lot of mental strength to pick themselves back up again," Fox insisted.

Sam Allardyce has subsequently been appointed Hodgson's successor and will name his first England squad on Sunday.
