Paulo Dybala to Tottenham: What we know so far about transfer interest in Juventus star

Tony Mogan29 July 2019

Tottenham have made contact with Juventus over an ambitious move for Paulo Dybala.

Spurs have already broken their transfer record once this summer to bring Tanguy Ndombele to the club for £65m.

They will have to do it again to sign Argentina international Dybala, with Juventus understood to be ready to listen to offers for the player.

And while there are just two weeks before the transfer window closes, Spurs believe a deal is possible with Juve confirming interest in their player.

Here’s what we know so far…

Who wants to sign him?

Manchester United have long been linked with the 25-year-old with reports claiming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees the Argentine as an ideal signing for his rebuild at Old Trafford.

Juventus’ interest in re-signing Paul Pogba has also fuelled speculative talk of a swap deal involving the two.

Spurs however have been weighing up a move or Dybala for the last three weeks.

Is a deal close?

Not quite.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is a huge admirer of his compatriot, however, describing him as among ‘the best in the world’ before Dybala dumped Spurs out of the Champions League in the last-16 two years ago.

Tottenham's interest is genuine and with just 11 days of the transfer window remaining, Juventus vice-president Pavel Nedved confirmed approaches have been made for the player.

“There are some proposals, there is some interest, but we wait for concrete action so we can then decide calmly," Nedved said at the announcement of Serie A fixtures for the new season.

How much will he cost?

Juventus valued Dybala at £80m - a fee that would require Spurs to break their transfer record for the second time this month.

Will it affect the Lo Celso deal?

Spurs remain in talks with Real Betis for playmaker Giovani Lo Celso, who is valued at £67m by the Spanish club, but they would have to choose whether to prioritise him or Dybala if Juve offer encouragement that they might sell.

Is he good enough?

Despite that disappointing return of five goals last season, Dybala is still regarded as one of the best forwards in Serie A having shone for the Bianconeri on the biggest stage.

Dybala scored the goal that dumped Spurs out of the Champions League at the round of 16 stage during the 2017-18 season, scoring twice against Barcelona in the previous stage as Juve reached the final.

Dybala can also play at No.10 and wide and his versatility appeals to Pochettino.
