New Tottenham stadium can save our season and bring back 'big feeling', says Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris says Tottenham's move to their new stadium can save their ailing season and help him forget a costly mistake in a 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.

Spurs will finally open their stunning 62,062-seater new home against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night after their 'Legends' side lost 5-4 to Inter Milan in front of 41,244 supporters in Saturday's final test event.

Mauricio Pochettino's side go into the game with one point from five matches after Lloris' error led to Toby Alderweireld's 90th-minute own goal to send Anfield delirious.

The Spurs captain blamed Liverpool's winner on bad luck and said the long-awaited move is a chance for Spurs to reverse their alarming free-fall.

“There's a big moment for the club on Wednesday,” the goalkeeper said. “That’s the moment to get back on the winning way and get the big feeling back because it was a bit unlucky for us yesterday against a title challenger. We showed our quality but it was not enough.

“It's one of the best stadiums in England – and maybe in Europe or the world. It's a very interesting moment for all the Spurs community. Now it's up to the players to make history inside this club, step-by-step.

“I think it's important to look forward. We have fantastic games ahead to play in our new stadium. It’s going to be an exciting moment for the players and for the fans. It has to be positive for us and we need to use it in that way.

"There's still the Champions League quarter-final to play [against Manchester City]. Of course we're disappointed because we try to win every game. But after this defeat and especially the way we played in the second half we need to keep pushing and keep going.

"In the second half we showed a great mentality, we were very positive. We controlled the game, we should have won the game probably. Then we conceded a late goal in a very bad luck way."

Victories for Manchester United and Chelsea this weekend further increased the pressure on Spurs, while Arsenal can leapfrog their north London rivals with a win over Newcastle on Monday night.

After a bright start on Merseyside, Spurs trailed to Roberto Firmino’s 16th-minute header but they were much the better team after half-time and Lucas Moura deservedly equalised from close range after a decisive move. Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli had chances to win the game before Lloris spilled a tame Mo Salah header into Alderweireld’s shin.

“I don't really know what happened,” Lloris said. “I tried to catch the ball but unfortunately there was no bounce. It bounced straight onto the shin of Toby – then what happened happened. The luck was on the opponent's side. It's tough.

"We made so much effort to come back into the game and we had chances to score the second goal. And then on set-pieces we conceded this goal so it's a bit sad for us.

“When you're a goalkeeper you know your responsibility,” he added. “Of course you question yourself and the good thing is there's another game in a few days on Wednesday but you need to switch off for yesterday and prepare for the next game. It's the best way to forget.

“There is seven games to play and the objective is to win all of them. This is how we're going to take this end of the season."
