Mauricio Pochettino plots Tottenham title fight amid Man Utd 'rumours'

Carl Markham24 December 2018

Mauricio Pochettino is keeping his focus on turning Tottenham into Premier League title contenders amid speculation linking him to Manchester United.

Standard Sport understands that Pochettino is Ed Woodward's preferred choice to take over as permanent Man Utd manager next summer following Jose Mourinho's sacking last week.

However, after a 6-2 thumping of Everton put Spurs within six points of Premier League leaders Liverpool and two behind second-placed Manchester City, there is only one target on Pochettino's mind.

"Talking about rumours, there are a lot of rumours," he said

"This guy (Spurs' press officer) became upset again or angry (by questions about United) but we cannot talk, we need to be focused on our jobs at Tottenham and do our best to try to be successful.

"I still believe Liverpool and Manchester City are the real contenders and favourites to win the Premier League. I think there is still a long way for me to say we are real contenders.

"If we are able to be consistent and play in the way we did last night I think yes, maybe, we could then be a real contender - but there is still a long way.

"Being involved in four competitions will be tough, but we are going to try."
