Tottenham risk 'playing with their destiny' by standing still in January transfer window, warns Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham must not "play with their destiny" and invest in the squad during the next window in order to stay competitive with the rest of the top six.

Spurs again laboured to a result in their London derby against West Ham, with Erik Lamela’s first half goal continuing their best start to a Premier League season.

The stats make for good reading, four League wins on the bounce, but the performances will be giving Pochettino a headache.

The Argentine said this season would be his biggest challenge in management before a ball was kicked, but perhaps he didn’t anticipate it would be down to a number of injuries and trips to Milton Keynes.

Having been the only club in English football not to sign a player over the summer, Pochettino knows they must try and bring someone in come the winter window.

“If you ask me I am happy, I am happy with the result but I think you cannot play with the destiny and you need to do the things properly,” Pochettino said.

“I don’t want to say that it is not doing things properly to not sign but, we need to try again in January or the summer to try and sign if we want to move on the team and the club.

“Now it will come, January, and we are going to try to sign and then, if it is not possible, we are going to tell you it was not possible to sign but I think, not only us, all the clubs and managers want to sign players, must refresh the squad, it is necessary and if today happens that, we can say ‘okay well done’.”

The win marks the start of a hectic run for Pochettino’s side, with a must win trip to PSV in the week before facing Manchester City at Wembley on Monday 29, before coming back to the London Stadium two days later for a League Cup tie.
