Andros Townsend believes Jose Mourinho's appointment as Tottenham manager was pivotal in the fight to keep hold of talisman Harry Kane.

The 26-year-old England captain insisted he would not stay at Tottenham "for the sake of it" back in March, stating his primary objective is to win club trophies rather than individual accolades.

Mourinho - a three-time Premier League winner - has a proven track record of trophies at each and every club he's managed across a career approaching the 20-year mark.

And Townsend believes his former Spurs team-mate and two-time Premier League golden boot winner will be more likely to stay under Mourinho as opposed to another "project" manager.

"If Spurs had gone for another project - if they'd got maybe the Ajax manager [Erik ten Hag] in I would say he has to leave; he can't be waiting four or five years to get back to the top and win a trophy," Townsend told talkSPORT.

"But I am certain Jose Mourinho will win a trophy during his time at Spurs, whether that's the League Cup, the FA Cup or the Premier League and the Champions League.

"I feel with the manager they have, they can fulfil Harry Kane's ambitions, and I hope they do."

Kane has emerged as one of Europe's top strikers, and has become Spurs' all-time top Premier League scorer with 137 goals.

Townsend says he saw Kane's finishing potential from a young age, but explains it was his physical development that transformed him into the striker he is today.

"In his younger days he was an incredible finisher. I remember before I broke through, I used to tell people that he's the best finisher I've ever played with - and people used to laugh at me

"What he lacked then was mobility, maybe a bit of speed, strength, his ability in the air. And in the next three of four years, he slowly started to add them to his game.

"It came to a point where he had it all, and he has it all. I'm sure he'll go on to do great things and hopefully win many things with Spurs."
